the big big boy

sigh. today is aidan's first day at daycare.

he's been at home with the nanny since he was 4 months old. and yes, he's spoiled.

i've been trying to prepare him the whole last week, telling him about school, and how much fun he'll have, and friends he'll make, and that mommy won't be there but he'll have fun and i'll come back soon.

i had to pry his little hands off my legs to get out of the classroom. when i called there an hour later, they told me he had unlocked the deadbolted door to the outside and run out in the parking lot. twice. then he opened the classroom door and went out into the hallway. so the director took him around and walked the whole complex with him, to show him that i wasn't there. she was very sweet about it. she brought him back to the classroom and sat with him, and he had stopped screaming. the next time i called, she said last she checked on him he was sitting by himself playing with a puzzle, still not crying.

i'm so distracted today at work, i've barely gotten anything done. poor kid. nap time is in about 1/2 hour. i wonder if he'll even try to lay down. they should be getting lunches out for them about now. i wonder if he'll even try to eat. well, the plan is to leave here at about 2 to go pick him up....

today is bad - i know tomorrow will be worse, just getting him in the car....

say a prayer for me and him.

Sounds like you all are doing everything you can. It's so hard though. He'll get there! And even if he screams when you leave for a few weeks, he won't have such bad days all the time. I've had mamas who had to carry their children into my house kicking and screaming and stiff as a board and I could hear them coming from the street...
And they adjust. Usually within a week they're having completely happy days, except for that five minutes at drop off.
I will pray for you both.

As for the sleeping, he either won't sleep AT ALL or he'll use it as an opportunity to check out from the weird new place and he'll sleep like five hours. usually it goes one way or the other when the kids are in a new place. :)

I don't have any advice. Just saying a prayer (or six) for you guys. Hugs!

Yeah, it's these kind of days when I do the most blog surfing at work.

I will pray for both of you. And give you some of my tricks in case they help.

On the hard days, like this morning ironically, once we have put all her stuff away, filled out the day sheet I will give Princess an option "I have to go to work. Would you like to sit on my lap for 2 minutes?" Many days those 2 minutes are just the thing she needs to adjust from being in my care to being at school.

When the 2 minutes are up I give her a hug and a kiss then suggest "do you want to play with the blocks/whatever the other kids are doing or go to the window and blow me kisses?" Some times I have to get hard and insist "No, you have 2 choices. Blocks or blow kisses. Which one?" Once I get an answer I get up with a big smile on my face, say "Have a great day" and leave the room without hesitation.
Sometimes I have to pry her off my leg and her teachers will run interference and try to redirect her attention. But 99% of the time we part ways with smiles.

These may not work for you but it follows the general idea of not being afraid to spend a little extra time at day care to help your child make the transition. I will NEVER be able to do the drop-and-run with Princess. She needs a little bit of warm up time and it makes all the difference.

Hang in there. You'll both figure it out.
