the one where i lobby for a nomination for wife of the year
ok, so hubby's birthday is friday, and i won't tell you how old he is, but it's a big one. somewhere between 30 and 50. and in spanish, it's cuarenta.
so here is what i did. he has an old old friend from high school, who is female, who was one of his best friends. never dated, just were great friends. they were close even through college, but when he got married, his exwife was very jealous and wouldn't let him see her anymore. then she got married too, and they moved away to ohio i think. so they lost touch, and he didn't even know what her married name was. this was eight years ago. he always says how he misses her, and is sure that she and i would be great friends, and how he regrets that they lost touch.
fast forward to two weeks ago: i am a sneaky sneak. i work in HR, so i do criminal records checks for applicants. so i looked her up by maiden name and birthday (the only thing hubby could remember) and found that she had a very old speeding ticket. from the warrant info, i got her driver license number, and found that she's living in texas again, and amazingly, they live about 15 minutes from our house. cool! so from the address on the driver license, i did a reverse lookup for phone number, and called her up. she was a little freaked out by me, i think, but i told her who i was and who i was married to, and that i wanted to surprise him by getting them together again. she is such a cool chick, and was very glad i called, and we talked for about half an hour before we started to plan this get together thing. so long story short, we are going to her house for dinner tomorrow night! she's married and has a four year old, so it will be fun to meet her hubby and get the kids together. i can't wait to see the look on his face.
i told my hairstylist about this on saturday, and she just gushed and told me how wonderful that is, and that she was impressed with how secure i am in my relationship with him. and that is true. i know this is not an old flame i'm fanning.
as i talked with his friend (or, i can call her our friend now) she commented on how great it is to have old friends in particular. you know, the ones you've known forever, through thick and thin. you just feel comfortable and safe with them. they know all your demons and secrets and failings and they like to hang out with you anyway.
jerry has had a few friends like this, but not many, and as you all know, as we go through life, it's harder and harder to keep track of everyone you're close to. so that is my gift to him this year - renewal of an old friendship.
plus, she's cool, and i want to hang out with her too!

Does he know yet? Or are you just going to say you're going out for dinner and show up at her house? Let us know how it goes!

Uber-cool, Carrie! What a great birthday surprise, you put so much thought into it.
Tell us all about the reunion dinner and tell Jerry "Feliz Cumpleanos" on his dia de cuarenta anos from us :)

yep, we're just going to show up. i talked to her again yesterday, and she's dug up a couple of old pictures of them from their junior high days. i wish i'd thought of that, because i know we have some somewhere, but i haven't been able to get him out of the house to dig through them. oh well. i'll let you know how it goes.

How fun and so sweet of you!
What she said about old friends is so true. I love that DH and I have known each other for so long. There aren't any secrets that we could keep from each other.
